Malls, like the products they sell, are ever-changing. The mall we once knew has been reinvented. Developers and architects are ripping away roofs and revealing open air plazas with vibrant landscaping. These outdoor shopping centers are becoming the flagships for surrounding neighborhoods. A place where people come not only to shop, but to be entertained, allow youngsters to play, eat, socialize and to relax. It seems that every hip neighborhood has one: Desert Ridge in Phoenix, DC Ranch and Kierland Commons in Scottsdale, just to name a few, and now you can add one more to the list, Tempe Marketplace.
At 1.3 million square feet Tempe Marketplace is the largest retail construction project in the Valley since 2001. The shopping center consists of three distinct areas: a lineup of large chain stores, an open-air shopping plaza with areas for entertainment that’s called the “District” and classic stand-alone retail and restaurant bays. But what makes Tempe Marketplace stand out is its stunning outdoor water features constructed by Shasta Pools and Spas Commercial division.
Shasta Pools teamed up with Vestar and McCarthy to complete this multi million dollar development. Shasta Pools Commercial Division was chosen for this project because of its excellent track record and experience in complicated construction projects. “We knew the Tempe Marketplace water features would include a very popular children’s splash pad but we also added drama with waterfalls backlit by fire elements and color-changing lighting. Overall, the water features add to the inviting and upscale feel of this community marketplace and invite relaxation,” noted Bill Gullekson of Shasta Pools Commercial Division.
Upon entering the shopping center patrons are greeted with an infinity edge water feature; this incorporates a precise perimeter line that allows water to flow in a constant stream across a wide, level area. The water feature narrows as you walk towards the entrance of the “District”, pointing shoppers in the right direction. Once in the main plaza shoppers are greeted by a towering sheet of water that pours from the top of a tall travertine wrapped column into a blue tiled basin. The basin mists heavily, creating a fog that is illuminated by a continuously changing colored light. The pool of water wraps around the structure leading you to a sitting area that is anchored by a long, corridor-like, fire place. As you follow the “urban stream” you end up at the beginning and at the opposite side of the fire place. There, another cascading sheet of water covers the opening of the fire corridor. The water diffuses the light of the fire so all you see is a soft orange glow.
From there, customers continue to experience water features as they progress through the shopping center. The sound of falling water permeates the open-air space and leads to a playful focal point—a splash pad which is illuminated with colorful lights. The large jets of cool water shoot into the air and rain down onto children playing. This is a major attraction and the splash pad is where most of the parents end their day. Shasta Pools actually sells a backyard version of the splash pad to customers wishing to have this type of aquatic play area at home. “I have so much fun using the splash pad as a backdrop for my children’s pictures,” frequent Tempe Marketplace visitor, Nicky Rodriguez, says.
Tempe Marketplace is a unique example of an architecturally stunning blend of water, air, fire and sound. It allows residents of Tempe and the surrounding area to make one stop for their shopping, dining and entertainment needs. Tempe Marketplace and Shasta Pools Commercial division have set the bar high for future open air market places.
As the metro Phoenix landscape changes, construction elements change too. Shasta Pools Commercial Division will continue to impact public spaces with sensational design trends, water features and technology.
